Born in Brownfield, Maine, John Howard Allen was an active landscape painter in Maine. He studied with Charles Woodbury in Ogunquit and settled in Cape Elizabeth. He was a member of the Portland Society of Art, the Ogunquit Art Association, and the Haylofters of Portland.
